Bio

Mayuran Tiruchelvam’s feature screenwriting and producing debut, The Girl is in Trouble, executive produced by Spike Lee and directed by Julius Onah, was a selection of the 2010 Tribeca Film Festival’s All Access program and screened at BAM’s New Voices in Black Cinema series.

At the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, Tiruchelvam and producing partner Gerry Kim premiered To Be Takei, a portrait of actor, activist and pop-culture maverick George Takei (Star Trek), which will be released theatrically by Starz Digital in August 2014. Tiruchelvam is also producing the documentary Farewell, Ferris Wheel, an examination of the fading American carnival industry and its reliance on guest worker visas, which was funded by Latino Public Broadcasting and ITVS, and was a selection in Film Independent’s Documentary Lab.

Tiruchelvam also line produced The Mend, starring Josh Lucas and directed by John Magary, which premiered at the SXSW, and Deniz Seviyesi, a Turkish-US production funded by the Turkish Ministry of Culture. While earning an MFA at Columbia University, Tiruchelvam received the Arthur Krim Memorial Award for Excellence in Producing and the Entertainment Partners Best Producer Award. He was the 2009 recipient of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences’ Fred Rogers Scholarship and has received support from the Princess Grace Foundation and The Producers Guild of America Debra Hill Fellowship.

Tiruchelvam earned a B.A. from Wesleyan University in Connecticut. He worked as a human rights observer in Latin America and a community organizer against the prison industrial complex in New York.
