Bio

Erin Li focuses on writing and directing character-driven, visually interesting and emotionally visceral films that expose audiences to under-represented worlds, people and ways of life, films that she hopes will entertain and inspire. Born to immigrant parents in New Jersey, Li’s path to filmmaking began in the fine arts world; she has painted and drawn since she could pick up a pencil. She studied painting at the Llotja School of Design and Art in Barcelona, Spain and her works have been showcased in New York and London.

Li discovered her love of filmmaking at Carnegie Mellon University while producing short films in conjunction with PBS and the School of Drama. After obtaining her bachelor’s degree in business administration and drama, she worked in finance in New York and Hong Kong for several years before moving to Los Angeles to pursue her passion for filmmaking.

Li’s most recent film, To the Bone, tells the story of a preteen migrant farmworker who attempts to defy the status quo with unintended consequences for herself and her family. It was one of six films greenlit and commissioned by Film Independent to explore themes of California and democracy. She is currently working on a feature that is an adaptation of L.A. COFFIN SCHOOL, a film that screened at the Directors Guild of America during opening weekend of the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival. She directed and co-wrote the film as part of Visual Communication’s Armed with a Camera fellowship. Other projects in the pipeline include a sci-fi feature, a dramedy web series, a series of fashion lookbook videos and several music videos.
