Logline

Public crying is a crime. Evelyn must transform her grief into gluttony to evade her father’s fate.

Synopsis

Evelyn, a 23-year-old woman, grapples with the loss of her father through a series of colorful ceremonies of e. Each ritual involves the use of specific colors, foods, and actions to process her emotions.

The story begins with Evelyn returning home from a bike ride, preparing for a ceremony infused with the color red to symbolize her anger. As she immerses herself in these rituals, Evelyn confronts her past, her memories, and the intense emotions tied to them.

The narrative unfolds with Evelyn meticulously preparing for her ceremonies, each one marked by a different color and corresponding emotion. Through these acts, she navigates her grief, from anger to a bittersweet happiness.

Evelyn’s relationship with her father is revealed through touching flashbacks, illustrating the profound impact he had on her and her struggle to reconcile his absence in a society that forbids crying in public.
 

Meet the Filmmakers

Katerina Hung — Director/Writer
Katerina Hung, a Taiwanese-born filmmaker based in the Arts District of Downtown Los Angeles, has recently made the transition from photography to filmmaking. In early 2023, she debuted as a writer-director with her experimental short film Punished Gods, establishing her voice in the industry.

With over two decades of experience in the arts, Katerina’s background includes classical music training, acting, and fine art photography. This diverse artistic foundation informs her filmmaking, enabling her to create complex and compelling characters. Her approach to storytelling is intuitive, with a deep focus on capturing emotional authenticity. She believes that every film element—colors, set design, character emotions, music, and dialogue—should align with the emotional tone she seeks to convey.

Katerina is currently developing her first feature film, with her latest short, Cry Eat Cry, serving as a pivotal part of this larger project. Her bold vision and commitment to artistic risk-taking position her as a filmmaker ready to make a significant impact in the world of cinema.

Thomas Bang — Executive Producer
Thomas Bang is an Executive Producer who transitioned from a successful two-decade career in the IT industry to the world of TV and film. Leveraging his expertise in project management, strategic planning, and technology, Thomas brings a unique perspective to entertainment production. His background in IT has equipped him with skills in optimizing workflows, managing complex projects, and integrating digital innovations into creative processes.

Driven by a passion for storytelling, Thomas saw an opportunity to blend his technical knowledge with visual arts, making his mark in an industry undergoing rapid digital transformation. Since entering the entertainment field, he has produced a range of projects, from short films to digital content, focusing on authentic human experiences and innovative storytelling techniques.

Thomas’s approach to production is shaped by his experience in IT, emphasizing collaboration, adaptability, and meticulous attention to detail. He manages all phases of production, from development through post-production, ensuring projects stay on track creatively and logistically.

Now, he aims to expand his portfolio by exploring projects that combine traditional cinematic techniques with digital advancements, continually pushing boundaries to create content that resonates with modern audiences while embracing the future of media.

Emma Mckie — Creative Producer
Emma McKie grew up in CO and was introduced to abstract art and architecture by her father, a builder and sculptor. She spent her childhood traveling to see the works of Andy Goldsworthy and Hundertwasser with him. In her early early years she worked as a gallerist and studied under a variety of artists in New England and Scotland. In 2014 she moved to Boulder to work in a print and framing shop to learn the trade. Shortly after she moved to Los Angeles where she now spends her time painting and modeling.

Kate Ketcham — Director of Photography
Kate Ketcham, originally from Virginia, earned her degree in English and Religious Studies from the College of William and Mary before transitioning to film studies. She pursued cinematography at Los Angeles City College and the American Film Institute, where she honed her skills in visual storytelling.

With a strong foundation in narrative filmmaking, she has expanded her expertise to include music videos, commercials, and documentaries, showcasing her versatility across various visual mediums. Her diverse background allows her to bring a dynamic and adaptable approach to different forms of storytelling, making her a well-rounded filmmaker.

Emily Mingyue Li — Production Designer
An AFI Alumni with a MFA in Production Design. She has worked as a Production Designer and Producer for various short films, TV pilot, commercials and theater plays. One of her past works, Feng Zheng (The Silent Whistle) has been selected for and had its world premiere at the 2022 Cannes film festival La cinefondation edition. Her work Bliss and Sad won the Sliver Award for Best Production Design in the Independent Shorts Awards. She is currently participant in th ADG Production Design Initiative program.

Alison Chang — Editor
Alison Chang is a filmmaker, editor, and assistant editor available for editing and post-production services worldwide. With experience working on narrative and documentary features, web content, and podcasts, Alison strives to be an editor who carries out a vision with care, intentionality, and creativity.

Rebecca Lo — Script Supervisor
As a queer Asian American woman filmmaker, Rebecca Leo is passionate about bringing culturally diverse stories featuring characters who have typically been relegated to the margins. Her work is informed by her diasporic experience of being raised in Georgia by Chinese immigrants from Indonesia.

Aileen Lin — Costume Designer
Aileen Lin is a designer with a keen interest in exploring the diverse facets of design approach. With degrees in both fashion and architecture, she brings a unique perspective to her work, seamlessly integrating three-dimensional thinking into design development, pattern-making, and construction, reflecting a holistic and innovative approach to design.
