Includes a conversation with directors Josh Kriegman and Elyse Steinberg
Co-presented by The New York Times Film Club
One of the most talked about films at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival was the documentary Weiner, by directors Josh Kriegman and Elyse Steinberg. Kriegman and Steinberg start their film by catching New York congressman Anthony Weiner at his peak, a crusading liberal politician with the kind of media savvy and quick, coruscating wit that would make him a natural for higher office. His high-profile marriage to celebrated Hilary Clinton aide-de-camp Huma Abedin only burnishes his image. The filmmakers also happen to be aboard as Weiner’s image crashes loudly with the infamous sexual selfies that ruined his profile. The directors trail Weiner through his recovery attempt, his 2013 campaign for Mayor of New York City, which began as a potential slam-dunk for the candidate, as his legendary potential still offered him a possible return to prominence. That is, until his compulsions for chasing women outside his marriage surfaced—again! It’s a fascinating portrait of tenacity—or is it delusion—as Kriegman himself even asks their beleaguered Weiner why is he still granting the directors access as his self-destructive behavior continues to detonate in ways that redefine self-immolation. Filmmakers Kriegman and Steinberg will make themselves available for a Q&A after Weiner shows.
