Actor-turned-director Matt Ross steps behind the camera for the second occasion—his directorial debut was the 2012 romantic melodrama 28 Rooms—with Captain Fantastic, an intimate and poignant look at a family held together through sheer will. Ross wrote and directed Captain Fantastic, in which Viggo Mortensen stars as Ben, a father who raises his family off the grid. He becomes a single dad after a tragedy strikes his household, and his mix of flintiness, pride, and love binds him to his six children. When he and his kids re-emerge from the wild to re-enter society, he has to reckon with the responses to his unorthodox parenting approach as well as the fact that his brood is maturing before his eyes. His arrogance is counted by the creeping realization that his relationship with his children has to change—the dramatic question becomes the age-old one: can he shift as his kids start to grow into curious individuals on their own. Captain Fantastic played the 2016 Sundance Film Festival and in Un Certain Regard at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival, where Ross was honored as Best Director in the section. The cast also includes Steve Zahn, Katherine Hahn and Frank Langella as the grandfather who is as determined in his stick-to-the-rules views as Ben is with his unconventional one.
