Director Julien Temple’s seductive flamboyance elevates this 1986 adaptation of the Colin MacInnes novel on the concussive shock that popular culture had on the rigid class, race, and sexual attitudes of 1960s London. Colin (Eddie O’Connell) is a young photographer whose camera allows him access to the worlds of advertising and the high society scene—and his lens allows him to capture the changes wrought by music, fashion and an eager, open-minded attitude about life; a point of view personified by the vivacious model and poster-girl-for-youth Crepe Suzette (Patsy Kensit). The battle for the soul of London between the squares and the cool is a culture war that Temple brings to wild, colorful, perpetually moving life with a cast that moves from British icons in the movie world (James Fox) to the music world, with unforgettable turns by Sade, Ray Davies and—in one of his best (and sadly, under-recognized) roles—David Bowie.
