Paul and Chris Weitz Serve Up Another Slice of American Pie
On January 16, Film Independent at LACMA, curator Elvis Mitchell opened the evening’s Live Read by introducing guest directors Paul and Chris Weitz, two brothers who are probably best known for their directorial debut, the 1999 classic teen comedy American Pie. Guest directors normally choose iconic films that are sources of inspiration, however, in a Live Read first, Paul and Chris chose the film that launched their careers. Adding a gender-bending twist to the evening, the women read the male roles and the men voiced the female characters. (See the cast list below.) Since the nominations for the Oscars were announced earlier that day, we thought it would be fun to hand out a few awards for the hilariously offbeat performance.
BEST FATHER-KNOWS-BEST MOMENT
In the classic scene when Jim’s Dad instructs his son on the finer points pornographic magazines, Sharon Stone flawlessly delivers her unique fatherly advice to Ari Graynor with hilarious nods, winks and raised eyebrows.
BEST SUPPORTIVE GIRLFRIEND
John Cho is both completely believable and utterly hilarious in the role of Heather, the choir girl who slowly falls for the lacrosse jock Oz.
MOST ANIMATED MILF
Here’s to you Mr. Michael Sheen, for delivering an unforgettable portrayal of cigarette smoking Stifler’s Mom, complete with the two-pack-a-day husky voice and pregnant pauses for effect.
BEST UNREHEARSED REACTION BY AN ACTOR
During the scene when Michelle tells Jim, “This one time – at band camp – I stuck a flute in my…”, Sharon Stone bursts out laughing at Mike White’s delivery of the iconic line.
