Bad Milo! & VOD hope for Genre Indies

Tomorrow you can watch everyone’s favorite goof Ken Marino (Wet Hot American Summer, Party Down, Childrens Hospital, Burning Love) suffer a gastrointestinal nightmare in horror comedy Bad Milo!, which is about an ass demon. You heard right. When a creature living in Marino’s intestine is awakened by his excessive anxiety, it forces its way out and slaughters the people who have stressed him out.

Magnet, the genre division of Magnolia Pictures, is releasing Bad Milo! on itunes/VOD on August 29 and in select theaters October 4. Check out the hilarious red band trailer:

Directed by Jacob Vaughan and executive produced by Mark and Jay Duplass, this horror-comedy is a perfect fit for VOD as, by nature, it’s not suited for mainstream audiences (there were some walkouts at sxsw – did they not realize they’d gone to see a film about a butt monster?), but does have a built-in audience of Ken Marino fans and horror-comedy buffs who live for this stuff. This is the type of movie that will undoubtedly build a cult following through word-of-mouth and may need more than one opening weekend to do so.

Ingenious promotional material for Bad Milo!, as seen on Indiewire

Magnet is leading the charge with genre VOD distribution, having released envelope-pushing titles such as V/H/S/2, Europa Report, Beyond the Black Rainbow, Goon, Tim & Eric’s Billion Dollar Movie, The Innkeepers, Tucker & Dale vs. Evil and I Saw the Devil. More and more, outlets like Magnet are able to release quality, experimental indies such as these directly to their eager fans, thanks to the reduced marketing costs and distributor-friendly division of profits on cable that comes with VOD.

If you’re a fan of Marino or silly horror movies or butt comedy or all of the above, check out Bad Milo! tommorrow with some like-minded buddies… just maybe not right before dinner.
