The Filmmaker-Subject Relationship in Docs
The Filmmaker-Subject Relationship in Docs
What is the relationship between documentary filmmakers and the participants in their films?
Come learn about the results of the first large-scale study to include input from documentary participants, sometimes referred to as “subjects,” through which nearly 200 participants shed light on key issues like transparency, compensation and privacy. In sharing their lives so publicly, was it worth the risks? What changes would they recommend? 678 filmmakers were also surveyed, revealing how they navigate relationships with those participating in their films. Join the team from ITVS who led the study, to unpack top findings and to explore the ethical responsibility between telling impactful stories and minimizing potential harm.
