A Chinese-American mother and daughter pull into a gas station in rural Virginia but are refused service for being Asian. Mary stubbornly refuses to drive away until she gets served, so eight-year-old Shelly uses her imagination to help her mother preserve dignity in the face of racism. A dark comedy set in the 80’s. Based on a true story.

Meet the Filmmakers

Christy Chan – Writer/Director/Producer

Christy Chan (she/her) is a writer-director-producer and racial justice activist. Her past projects include “Who’s Coming To Save You?,” a 2015 video series about the resurgence of the KKK during the Obama presidency, and the public art project “Inside Out” which was censored in 2019 for featuring undocumented Californians speaking out against racism. She is the founder of “Dear America,” a guerrilla activism project that projects 20-story-tall artworks by AAPI artists on high rise buildings. Previously a writer, director and creative director working in TV commercials, she has helped create work for Nike, Apple and Levi’s. In 2004, she was a co-architect in launching the Dove Real Beauty Campaign, a global marketing campaign that is credited with ushering more inclusive standards for female representation in television advertising. She has been an Artist-in-Residence and fellow at SFFILM, YBCA Museum, Bemis Center, and Headlands Center for the Arts among other institutions. www.christychan.com

Nico Opper – Consulting Producer

Nico Opper (they/them) is an Emmy®-nominated director and producer who has been featured in Filmmaker Magazine’s annual “25 New Faces of Independent Film”, Indiewire Magazine’s “25 LGBT Filmmakers on the Rise”, and DOC NYC’s “40 Under 40” list of documentary talents. Their directorial debut, Off and Running (Tribeca Film Festival Audience Favorite, P.O.V. broadcast), received the Best Documentary Award at Outfest, The WGA Award for Best Documentary Screenplay and a national Emmy nomination. Their episodic series The F Word (PBS Digital Studios & SoulPancake) was nominated for a Gotham Award for Breakthrough Series, an IDA Award for Best Short Form Series, and was named a top series of the year by Indiewire. Most recently they produced the ITVS feature documentary Try Harder! which premiered in the U.S. Documentary Competition at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival. www.nico-opper.com

Gordon Yamate – Executive Producer

Gordon Yamate (he/him) engages in philanthropy following his professional career as a corporate partner in a national law firm and general counsel of two public companies headquartered in Silicon Valley. He continues as a long-time member of the Board of Trustees of the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles, where he chaired the board from 2010 to 2015. He currently chairs the San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art’s Board of Directors. In addition to teaching as an adjunct lecturer in law at Santa Clara University Law School, he has served on the boards of numerous nonprofit organizations, including the Silicon Valley Community Foundation and the National Conference of Christians and Jews, Silicon Valley Region. He is interested in using the arts to address issues of racism and to create relationships and opportunities that will promote understanding and tolerance among diverse and polarized communities.
