Bio

Julia Lerman is a writer and director based in Los Angeles. In 2016, she and her filmmaking partner, Roja Gashtili, were fellows in Film Independent’s Directing Lab with their feature Rita Mahtoubian Is Not a Terrorist. The script was one of five narrative projects chosen for the 2015 Sundance Creative Producing Labs. In 2015 they were also inaugural fellows of the Tribeca/Chanel Women’s Filmmaker Program with their most recently completed short, The Last Shift.

Previously, they were fellows in AFI’s Directing Workshop for Women (2014), recipients of the Tribeca All Access grant (2013), and selected for IFP’s Emerging Narrative Labs (2010).

Lerman began her career in New York City, working on shows such as MTV’s True Life and Showtime’s This American Life. She is a graduate of Wesleyan University.
