Bio
Marie-Helene Carleton is an award-winning filmmaker, photographer and writer. She is currently completing her first feature-length documentary film about the destruction of culture in Iraq as a result of the war, and the passionate efforts to protect the archaeological sites from looters. The film is being produced by the Oscar-winning team, Wider Film Projects. Her film work has appeared online for the New York Times, Newsweek and the Financial Times, and her three part online documentary for the Financial Times was a 2009 Webby Honoree. Her writing and photography has been published in The New York Times, the Financial Times, and several anthologies. She is co-author, with Micah Garen, of the memoir American Hostage published by Simon and Schuster, which received starred reviews on Kirkus and Publisher’s Weekly. A CBS Sunday Morning segment about her and Micah Garen’s film work in Iraq was an Emmy nominee. She has been interviewed on ABC, NPR, MSNBC and others about her work as a journalist and filmmaker. A co-founder with Micah of the media production company Four Corners Media she is a graduate of Johns Hopkins and has been award fellowships at the MacDowell Colony and the Ucross Foundation, and was selected to participate in the 2009 IFP Documentary Film Lab.
