Julia Newton

  • Program Year:Producing Lab 2002

Bio

Both native southerners and hopeless music junkies, Julia and John bring a wealth of film and television writing and producing experience to Raggedy Devils. Once a starving New York playwright (Speed of Light; 1990 Finalist – Eugene O’Neil Theater Center, National Playwrights Conference), Julia sold out in 1989, moving west to shamelessly pursue the riches of television. For the last 14 years, she’s created and/or written and produced series television for all the major networks as well as Fox as the WB. A former Gospel songwriter, John set out to change the world, penning films like the 1990 anti-apartheid release, Bopha! (starring Danny Glover and Alfre Woodard). Soon after, he too lost his way and wandered in the lucrative network sitcom wilderness before seeking redemption writing television movies – like the 2002 Emmy-winning, The Matthew Shepard Story (NBC).

Raggedy Devils

Logline

A spirited, music-driven faux-documentary about Lillian McMurry - the feisty Mississippi housewife who founded Trumpet Records in 1951 - and her bond with an eccentric band of bluesmen, in particular, the bizarre and mercurial Sonny Boy Williamson.
