Bio
Berkeley-born of Chinese-Malaysian and Vietnamese heritage, Phang is a graduate of the MFA Directing program at the American Film Institute. Phang’s feature debut HALF-LIFE, which she wrote and directed, is distributed by Wolfe Releasing, Warner Brothers Digital Distribution, the Sundance Channel, and Comcast VOD. In 2008 HALF-LIFE screened at Sundance, SXSW and the LA Film Festival and premiered internationally at the Tokyo International Film Festival (a Grand Prix Nominee). HALF-LIFE received the Gen Art Grand Jury Prize, the AAIFF Emerging Director Award for Best Feature, Best Narrative at the San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival, and the Visionary Award for Excellence in Visual Innovation in Calgary’s Fairy Tales Queer Diversity Festival. LOOK FOR WATER, Phang’s follow-up project, was selected for development at the Sundance Screenwriters Labs. Phang has received a Sundance Institute Cinereach Grant, the Sundance Annenberg Feature Film Fellowship Grant and the Tribeca Film Festival L’Oreal Woman of Worth Vision Award to support development of LOOK FOR WATER. Christine Vachon and Killer Films are Executive Producing. Phang meanwhile executive produced CRAZY BEATS STRONG EVERY TIME, a short that premiered in Sundance 2011. She was recently commissioned to write and direct a sci-fi feature set for a 2012 release.
