As a writer/producer, Anil Baral has projects in television and film. He is producing The Rosenbergs, a biopic of Ethel and Julius Rosenberg, written by Yon Motskin. Elisabeth Moss (Handmaid’s Tale, Mad Men, Top of the Lake) is starring. Recently, this film has been financed by 2929 Entertainment. With this project he has participated in Film Independent’s Producer’s Lab, Film Independent’s Fast Track Program, and IFP’S No Borders Program. The project received a Tribeca All Access Grant and was awarded a Los Cabos International Film Festival Gabriel Figueroa Film Fund postproduction award and grant.
Recently, he received the Asian Cinema Fund screenplay development grant from the Busan International Film Festival for a feature script, The Palace. This horror film is very loosely inspired by the 2001 Royal Massacre in Nepal. Baral was awarded a Tribeca Institute & Sloan Foundation Screenplay Grant for A Noble Affair. This feature screenplay was on the 2016 Athena List, highlighting projects with strong female roles. Neda Armian (Rachel Getting Married) is also producing. This project was selected to participate in the 2018 Rotterdam Lab.
Baral’s writing awards include the New York Foundation for the Arts Screenplay Award and Grant. In television, Baral participated in the Producer’s Guild of America Diversity Workshop for a television pilot. For theatre, Baral wrote the book and produced a stage musical set during the Irish Troubles, One Day. The most recent workshop was directed by Liesl Tommy (Tony Award nominee for Broadway’s Eclipsed). He was a producer on the internationally successful short musical film Pretty Dead Girl (Sundance, AFI and Tribeca Film Festival, and many others) directed by Shawn Ku, with lyrics and music by Annemarie Milazzo.
Prior to starting Fictitious Features, Baral worked as a story analyst for Working Title and then worked as the Director of Development for the writer/director, Kimberly Peirce, (Boy’s Don’t Cry, Stop Loss) under a deal with DreamWorks. Baral occasionally freelances in commercials and has worked with many of the top advertising agencies and directors.
