This is the fourth annual presentation of a selection of the New York Times’ provocative and insightful Op-Docs films—short films commissioned by the Times in which point-of-view is as integral and storytelling skills. This year’s edition of the Op-Docs at Film Independent at LACMA will be devoted to films by women directors. The group spans from a trenchant view of politics (How to Win an Election, which takes us inside the mind of a campaign strategist) to religion and sexuality (Elder: A Mormon Love Story with its Mormon subject reflecting on how a missionary trip to Italy changed his life”) to the tenuous grasp for a place to rest for the homeless (Hotel 22, wherein a Palo Alto city bus becomes a mobile sanctuary for the indigent after the sun goes down) to a sociopolitical media (Unsilenced, about an activist who is killed on-air while hosting a radio show for fellow displaced residents of a rural town in Mexico). Op-Docs executive producer Kathleen Lingo will take part in a Q&A along with Hotel 22 director Elizabeth Lo, Elder: A Mormon Love Story filmmaker Génea Gaudet and Unsilenced director Betzabé García.
